On Easter Sunday 2018, Michael Hudson was tragically killed when the airbag inflator in his 2002 Volvo S60 exploded, shooting shrapnel into his neck. On behalf of the Hudson Family, David Harris and Louie Cook filed suit against Volvo seeking to bring to light the dangerous design of the FG2 Twin airbag inflator which was manufactured by ZF-TRW. During the course of the lawsuit, Sico Hoelscher & Harris uncovered that the propellant used to inflate the airbag could degrade over time if exposed to high temperatures and humidity. When this happened, the airbag’s inflator would rupture when deployed, spraying metal pieces of the inflator with deadly force. As a result of Sico Hoelscher Harris investigation, Volvo and ZF-TRW announced earlier this week that Volvo would recall over 54,000 S80 and S60 Sedans from 2000-2003.
David Harris, when reflecting on the recall recounts:
“This recall will save lives and was our goal when initially bringing our lawsuit. The Volvo and ZF-TRW FG2 inflator is a ticking time bomb that cost Michael Hudson his life. From the very beginning, Michael’s mother wanted her son’s death not to be in vain. Nothing will bring Michael back, but the recall issued by Volvo brings the Hudson family one step closer to honoring Michael’s life and legacy.”
